NextGen offers EHR and PM systems for ambulatory pratices, and an Inpatient Clinicals system for hospitals. They are headquartered in Horsham, PA., and have about 1500 employees.

In a 2011 KLAS study, Ambulatory EMR: Win Rates, EMR Replacements, and Provider Loyalty, the most popular vendor was Allscripts, considered in 16 percent of deals; it was followed by Epic (12 percent) and NextGen (10 percent). This is an important reflection on the growth potential for NextGen, as it doesn’t appear to be losing ground in the very large secondary EHR market.

NextGen Strengths and Weaknesses

One primary focus for NextGen that has worked out well is community health centers. FQHCs have unique billing needs and and NextGen is set up to meet those well.

A frequently cited challenge with NextGen is on the interface side. Salespeople might commit to interfaces that have not been previously developed, and could take longer than a year to complete and go-live. If you would consider interfaces to any particular labs or hospital information systems to be critical, it would be a good idea to demand references for those specific scenarios.

Fortunately, NextGen truly has PM and EHR functionality all in one system. It is built on SQL and has a good reputation for usability. As with Centricity, Greenway, and other competitors, provider adoption will can be made easier through selection of appropriate forms, building a good workflow. The forms selected and used can make all the difference in the provider’s satisfaction and efficiency.
